I received my BA in education (first class honors) from the University of Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania (1997), and both MA and PhD in linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2000 and 2003 respectively. I am interested in both descriptive as well as theoretical linguistics. In particular, my research is anchored in Phonetics (e.g. the phonetic realization of tone in Kisukuma and other Bantu languages), Phonology and Morphology of African languages and particularly Bantu languages. I am also interested in historical linguistics, comparative Bantu studies and the interaction of language and society in Africa. I am currently working on a linguistics book titled Tone and Reduplication in Kisukuma (to be completed in the summer 2005). I am also active in developing new teaching materials and techniques aimed at improving the teaching and learning of Kiswahili language.

Selected Publications:

To appear Tonal Transfer in Kisukuma Reduplication, New Trends in African Linguistics, John Mugane (ed). Africa World Press. New Jersey.

To appear Rap Music in an African Language Classroom: The Case of Kiswahili. Journal of African Language Teacher’s Association (JALTA) 2001.
